The IQGL was founded in 1993 on the initiative of Mrs Le Rowell, wife of the US ambassador to Luxembourg. Members meet regularly at quilting bees and monthly meetings. Membership is about 200.

The first national exhibition was held in 1993. National exhibitions were also held in 1998 and 2003 to celebrate the fifth and tenth anniversaries. A very successful International Exhibition and Competition was held in 2000.

The guild organizes workshops for beginners and intermediates, most of which are held by international artists and teachers from all over the world. The members also travel abroad to participate in workshops and exhibits in other countries. Its quarterly magazine is called "Quilt Newsletter".
