The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles was founded in 1979 and has grown to a membership of over 7,000. As a registered educational charity, the Guild promotes appreciation and understanding of the art, techniques and heritage of quiltmaking and aims to give it the status it deserves, both as a craft and as an art. The Guild also aims to foster a climate of friendship and co-operation amongst quiltmakers, both in the UK and abroad.
The organisation's headquarters are based in Halifax, Yorkshire, where there is an office, library and a resource centre. This is also the home of the Guild's Heritage Collection, one of the largest collections of quilts, tops, clothing and other quilted items in Britain.
The Guild has a strong regional structure and each of its eighteen regions organise their own events, newsletters, exhibitions and workshops. Encouragement is also given to young quilters who have their own quarterly magazine, regional reps and special projects.
National events include the AGM and Conference each spring, and the Festival of Quilts held in Birmingham in August. Members are kept informed about events, news and ideas through "The Quilter", the quarterly journal of the Guild, and the Guild's website.
